The English Premier League, the richest football league on the planet, signed a $163 million sponsorship deal with Sorare, the crypto football trading-card game backed by Messi. The problem: the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) has frozen $13.5 million of the first payment as part of an investigation into whether that money has something shady behind it.
Sorare, once valued at $4.3 billion, is also facing a lawsuit for operating as an unlicensed bookmaker in the UK. The Premier League itself isn't accused of anything, but while the mess gets sorted out, its digital trading cards of superstars like Messi have their account frozen by the cops.
