Newsom signs a law banning California public officials from launching their own meme coin

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2409, a law barring any public official, state, local or federal, elected or appointed, from launching their own meme coin: tokens whose value rides purely on hype and fame rather than any real business behind them. The law takes effect on January 1, 2027, and also forces crypto platforms to delist, for California residents, any meme coin already launched by a public official.

The law is part of an eleven-bill package Newsom's office bluntly titled 'The Opposite of Trump,' and it responds directly to the president's own token: according to figures cited by the governor, nearly a million buyers of $TRUMP lost more than $3 billion while he pocketed roughly $636 million. From now on, state and local prosecutors can force violators to hand back their profits.
