The NBA's Instagram was hacked to promote a coin that peaked at a $3,500 market cap

On October 14, the NBA's official Instagram account briefly displayed a post reading “Where basketball passion meets blockchain innovation. Join the community and explore $NBA today. BUY NOW!”, along with the contract address of a memecoin created that same day on Pump.fun. The post was deleted quickly, and the league did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The token barely attracted buyers: its market cap was around $3,500 that evening. It isn't the first time. In March 2025, hackers posted from official NBA accounts, including those of Spain and the UK, an announcement for another “$NBA Coin” on Solana, and the league confirmed the hack at the time.
