A hacker steals $53 million in crypto and blows it on Pokémon and Magic cards

Jonathan Spalletta, 36, from Rockville, Maryland, has been found guilty by a Manhattan jury of computer fraud and money laundering. In April 2021 he exploited two flaws in Uranium Finance's smart contracts: first he pulled out $1.4 million and negotiated to keep $386,000 as a supposed “bug bounty,” then twenty days later he took another $53.3 million, which sank the platform.

He laundered the money through Tornado Cash and went shopping: a Magic Black Lotus card for $500,000, 18 sealed Alpha booster packs for $1.5 million, a first-edition Pokémon base set for $750,000, a Roman coin celebrating Julius Caesar's assassination for $600,000, and a piece of fabric from the Wright brothers' plane that Neil Armstrong carried to the Moon. In a message he had written: “Crypto is all fake internet money anyway.” He faces up to 30 years in prison.
