Tax Guru
Álvaro Romillo, known online as "CryptoSpain," was arrested by Spain's Civil Guard over his alleged role in Madeira Invest Club (MIC), a platform promising guaranteed returns from investments in art, watches, luxury cars, and wine, accused of defrauding more than 3,000 investors out of over €260 million. Spain's National Court ordered his arrest after detecting a hidden Singapore account holding €29 million, which raised the flight risk.
Before the scandal, Romillo had built a following giving talks across Spain on how to "legally dodge taxes," and had donated €100,000 to fund the campaign of political figure Alvise Pérez. Months before his arrest, he reported being the victim of a violent robbery of €1.2 million in crypto, a case investigators haven't ruled out was part of the same scheme. He faces more than 10 years in prison for fraud, money laundering, and organized crime.
