Impossible Lawsuit
Bybit has formally sued North Korea, its intelligence agency, and the Lazarus Group over the $1.5 billion hack it suffered in 2025
Exchange Bybit filed a civil lawsuit in a US federal court against the North Korean government, its Reconnaissance General Bureau (its intelligence agency), and the Lazarus hacking group, over the $1.5 billion crypto theft it suffered in February 2025, the largest crypto hack in history. The court has already granted Bybit an expedited discovery request, based on evidence that some of the traceable funds ended up flowing into exchanges operating in the United States.
On paper, the lawsuit seeks damages and the freezing of traced assets, though no one expects Kim Jong-un to show up to a hearing or pay anything: industry experts see the move mainly as a legal lever to pressure intermediary exchanges into freezing and returning whatever funds can still be traced.
