A large, aggressive lizard that's illegal to own without a permit in Massachusetts turned up hiding in a car's wheel well, and nobody knows who it belongs to
On September 3, 2026, Burlington, Massachusetts animal control officer Jamie Jeffrey responded to a report of a lizard loose in a parking lot and found a full-grown mangrove monitor, an exotic species native to Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia, hiding in the wheel well of a car. "It didn't want to be captured, let's put it that way," Jeffrey said, describing the animal as "on the aggressive side" and the kind of reptile "you have to be very knowledgeable to care for."
