Scammers mailed physical letters to US crypto holders copying the official IRS look, with Treasury branding, a notice number, and a deadline to "avoid penalties." The letter included a QR code leading to a site that mimicked a real government portal, asking victims to pick their exchange or wallet, estimate their holdings' value, and leave a phone number for a "representative" to complete "verification."

Why it's false: The IRS confirmed publicly that no "Digital Asset Compliance Portal" exists and that it never includes QR codes in official mail. Coinbase, working with threat-intelligence firm DarkTower, traced the scam's infrastructure to a domain registered in Hong Kong and hosted in Romania, already linked to other phishing sites. If you get a letter like this, don't scan the code: verify directly at irs.gov or by calling the agency through its official channels.
