A video showed Cristiano Ronaldo recommending a token backed by a "United States Water Reserve"
Coinciding with Portugal's elimination from the 2026 World Cup, a video circulated online in which Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to urge his followers to invest in USWR, a token claiming to be backed by U.S. water reserves.
Why it's false: It's a deepfake: there's no legitimate project called the "United States Water Reserve," Ronaldo never recorded that video, and it's part of a wave of more than 2,700 deepfake ads featuring footballers (Messi, Neymar, Luis Díaz and others) detected during the 2026 World Cup by the firm Revelum, with ad activity targeting some players' likenesses spiking as much as 1,700%.
